Day 2: The Importance of a Burning Desire

In the personal development classic, Think and Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill said that the first step to riches was to have a burning desire. I challenged the principle for years until I finally realized that Napoleon was right.

There are things that we all know we need to do:

  • Lose weight
  • Pay off debt
  • Spend more time with our kids and spouses
  • Finish things we started long ago

But yet, they remain undone; why?

The thing that got me into action was a burning desire.

Simply needing to do a thing is not enough.

I had one debt collector who would call me all day and night. I was sick of them.

Then I decided I would do whatever I had to do to pay them off, and I did.

Needing to pay off the debt should have been enough. But now I know better.

If you’re stuck at the starting line, the first step is to crystallize your burning desire. What is it that you truly want? Passion gives you the energy and power to push through the insecurities, distractions, and obstacles to your goals.

Once you figure out your burning desire, the second step is to let it breathe.

Fire needs oxygen, and so does your desire. Don’t apologize for having passion or even multiple passions. It is the first step to getting what you truly want.
