What are some things that can help you finish more?
If you have trouble finishing things, there is a reason.
Starting many things and not finishing is a habit, nothing more, nothing less, but one that can be broken.
Not finishing has its roots in overthinking; whenever you see a non-finisher, understand that person is overthinking and doing too little.
It can be a minor inconvenience when you don’t finish today; tomorrow, it can cost you dearly.
So let’s talk about why you might not execute at the level you need to and, more importantly, how to increase your finishing rate.
Barriers to high execution
- Lack of clear goals — when you start your day, you should write your plans and make them simple. You will likely not get that goal if you have any doubt or lack of clarity. The busier you are, the more of a necessity it is. I open my outlook some mornings and see three new problems waiting for me. I have to have goals to prioritize what matters versus what doesn’t. You might and likely will tweak your plans throughout the day but cloudy or no objectives won’t get your anywhere.
- Trying to get it right instead of getting it done — There is perfectionism and then “I-have-to get-it-right-the-first-time-ism.” I blame school and corporate America…
