Sprint to Freedom: Balancing a Job with Building a Business
The Great Balancing Act
One of the more challenging things you can do is start a business while working a full-time job. If I had it to do over again, I would have done this when I had much more free time and energy. But here I am, and it must be built now.
Mindset coach and speaker Lisa Nichols referred to your job as your first investor. I like that because it gives you the job the respect it deserves. You are starting this business primarily with income from that job.
I have learned to add that your job is your first client. Brian Tracy said to always see yourself as self-employed; you are the CEO of your own personal services organization. Your job is your biggest client. So, my current employer is my biggest client. If true, you wouldn’t look to ditch your biggest client. If anything, you would want to add to that clientele.
Different mindset, right?
Balancing a job then becomes more about balancing clients and multiplying yourself.
You must treat your big clients well if you don’t have enough money to replace them. That means doing the best job you can and delivering things on time and with high quality. But you should also be open to developing new businesses.
