Today, I will talk about staying on track when feeling overwhelmed, the power of defining, and why self-doubt isn’t bad.
Point 1 — When the Flood Comes
Many professional athletes have dealt with being overwhelmed by the pressure of expectations on the field or in life. No athlete is immune from it, and no money, fame, or athletic ability can keep it away.
I have learned the importance of preparation, routine, and stability to keep us from drowning. When Hurricane Katrina flooded and destroyed the city of New Orleans, the levees broke, which allowed the water to come in. Similarly, many people, athletes or not, don’t have levees, so getting overwhelmed is easy.
Others do have levees, but they need to be updated or maintained, which is what happened with Katrina. Sometimes, we have to update our daily practice, add new things, and remove what isn’t needed to stay safe when the rain comes.
Point 2 — Defining
I learned about defining years from a network marketer who shared audio from Earl Shoaff, who mentored Jim Rohn. Rohn is credited with starting Tony Robbins in the personal development industry. Shoaff would teach his network marketing team that if they had a goal, they should define it.
