The Illusion We Have Unlimited Time

Tim Grover, one of my favorite authors who wrote W1NNING and Relentless, did an interview where he spoke about the late Kobe Bryant. Along with Michael Jordan, Bryant was Grover’s client in their playing days.

During their training, he recalled telling Kobe, “We have to do it now; we don’t have time” Grover then said, “I wish I were wrong.”

Bryant died along with his daughter and seven other victims in a helicopter crash in Feb 2020.

The illusion that we have a lot of time is enticing. Hearing we have time feels good to a time-starved soul.

Maybe you have a pervasive feeling that there is never enough time. So The idea of rushing sounds draining.

It comes down to our view of our purpose. And that we are not here to stay; we are passing through this life.

Bryant accomplished so much in his 42 years.

He finished as a top 10 player all time
Won 2 MVPs
Won 5 titles
Named a 15x all-star
He had a beautiful family
Was a staunch supporter and advocate for gender equality in sports
Started a venture capital firm
Made a movie and won an Oscar
And many other things we probably know nothing about

Kobe lived his life as if he had no time and, as a result, did more than most people would get done with twice the time.

If you haven’t figured it out yet, this post is about procrastination. More to the point, it’s about getting clear on your purpose and then moving toward it.

I spoke with my best college friend yesterday, which is always a ton of laughs and catching up. I don’t call my friends and family nearly enough; I am working on improving that.

He told me about a classmate of ours that I didn’t know died suddenly after choking during a Super Bowl party. He had health issues, exact nature unknown, and honestly none of my business.

I am praying for his family, but it also reminded me that we don’t have as much time as we think.

I don’t mean to sound grim, but I believe we need to be intentional in how we live.

That doesn’t mean you get four jobs and work yourself into a stupor, but if there is something you’re putting off, you should get busy doing it. If it’s a lot of things, make a list and one by one check it off.

Don’t be so obsessed with the results.

Maybe you need to apologize to someone you’ve hurt.
They may not want to hear anything from you, but send the letter or the email.

You may start a business, and it makes no money. Start t anyway. You will learn things that a book can’t teach you.

Try something new even you will look silly doing.

We have time, not unlimited time. We should live accordingly.
