Why can’t I finish anything?
I remember starting to create a course on web design.
I had it all planned out. It was going to super helpful for people who knew little to nothing about making websites.
It would also help me with another source of income.
I started strong like always, and then maybe 2–3 days in, I lost momentum, and next thing you know, I had moved on to something else.
The pattern is painful and familiar.
Start with great intentions and enthusiasm.
Get stuck, frustrated, or distracted.
Stop moving
Quit
What I know for sure is that all problems have a spiritual root.
Whether you have trouble losing weight, spending less, or making more, it all comes back to the spirit.
The spirit is the engine of human beings.
If you haven’t finished anything or have trouble finishing things, it’s a spiritual problem.
Somewhere along the way, you didn’t finish something. Then you did it again and ultimately became a habit.
Finishing is essential to maintain the balance of life. Just like you can’t have left without right, hot without cold, you can’t have a beginning without an ending.
The more things you start without finishing, it throws your life out of balance.
We know why finishing is essential, so why don’t we do it?
- We don’t have a clear goal — When you set out to do something, you should have a clear objective written down and committed to memory. The mind needs something to focus on.
- We meet resistance and get flustered — this is probably the one that gets me. Things are going well, and then we hit a snag. Most snags can be overcome with a little strategy and faith. But if you don’t control your emotions, frustration can take you out of the game.
- We get distracted — One cardinal sin of the non-finisher is that they try to do too much at once. When you give the mind ten goals, it is pulling in 10 different directions. Maybe you have a job where you are in charge of many things, and prioritizing seems impossible. I’ve learned, however, that if you don't pick the one thing that needs to get done right now, you won’t get much of anything done. It’s the same thing with finishing. You are better off picking the one you need to complete right now, so it’s done and not hanging over your head.
How to finish better:
- Write down a clear goal — 10 words or less of what you need to do.
- Choose things you can do in a day — even if it’s a long project, finish something every day, you will make more progress and keep the momentum going.
- Have one goal at a time — Pick the one thing that needs to be finished daily and attack that with all the energy you got. Once you complete that, you are ready for the next thing.
- Be ready for obstacles — think of 3 things that could stop what you’re doing and prepare for it. There is no need to be surprised by obstacles. Just be ready for them and decide that you will finish despite the challenges.
