Your People are Looking for You

Here what to do while they are finding you

Multiple people this week reached out to me for social media and website help.

I run an internet marketing company, but I do it part-time as I work full time in another field. I don’t invest in as much as marketing as I should.

These leads came from avenues (IG and an ad) that haven’t produced much fruit. But if those avenues weren’t there, those people wouldn’t find me.

I like the concept of 1000 fans, popularized by Kevin Kelly. It may end up being many more for you, but these are your people, the people you are to serve.

While building a following or a business, it can seem like it’s taking a long time for your 1000 or more fans to show up.

But they are looking for you.

It’s tempting to sulk, get impatient, or depressed because your people aren’t showing up. Consider directing that energy toward preparing for their arrival.

Here is what you can do while your people are finding you:

  1. Solve a Small Problem— you can solve minor problems through a post or a quick video. Most of your content should be something that people can walk away with and use, even if they never do business with you.
  2. Stimulate Their Creativity— sometimes, we all need that spark that wakes up our creativity, and we can figure it out from there. Be that for someone.
  3. Build Your Ecosystem — at a minimum, you should have a FB, IG, and website that can capture emails — now, let’s talk about your business. Regardless of what you’re doing, it would help if you had an ecosystem. An ecosystem is where you and those you are serving will connect. The first part of this is your social media presence. You can have multiple accounts or have one; you can succeed either way. But you should have something. It’s astonishing how many businesses and entrepreneurs still don’t have a consistent social media presence. The second part of that ecosystem is your website. Multiple articles take about how websites are dead, and you don’t need them. They are largely BS and probably clickbait. Your website is the hub of your ecosystem. Everyone will head there to do business with you, but it is even more critical regarding Facebook and its associated properties going down earlier this year. If your central hub is a social media account, what happens if that goes down? Start small and build something; I don’t care if it’s WordPress, Wix, Squarespace, or Shopify. Build a website and take it live.
  4. Continue Creating Quality Content — Quality content is what your people will sign up for and continue visiting to consume. I can’t tell you how exactly to create quality content. The best test is…would you read it again and again? If not, that’s ok; it just means you have more work to do. Focus on improving your content, and many things will take care of themselves.
  5. Create a Solution They Can Buy and Use — Finally, if you are in business, once your people find you; have a solution ready to buy. It doesn’t have to be your product; you can be an affiliate. But creating and/or offering a solution that works will help that person and you. The great Zig Ziglar said it best, help enough people solve their problems, and your problems will disappear.

If your follower counts are low and you feel discouraged, come back to this post often. Your people are out there, and they are looking for you. Stick around long enough so they can find you.
